Longest Day early morning ride 22.6.19

Martin Sladers Breakfast ride from Ferry Nab

Thirteen caught the first Windermere ferry at 6.50 am on the longest day, it was a lovely morning to cycle along the lake shore towards Wray Castle, with a stop along the way at the Boat Bike jetty to enjoy the sunny morning view of the lake very still and quiet, before the normal daytime movement of boats.  A further stop to enjoy the view at Wray Castle, and Mike discovered a slash in the sidewall of his tubeless tyre, he and Hilary stayed to sort it out. We then rode past a tranquil Blenham Tarn and then up the steep cycle track to get onto Loanthwaite Lane, and then Scar House Lane to Colthouse. Cycling round the south of Hawkeshead and we soon were soon cycling down the entrance to Estwaite Water café, lovely to be greeted by the very welcoming smell of breakfast being cooked on our arrival. Mike and Hilary soon re-joined us having cycled by the quicker road route.
We all enjoyed well-earned breakfast and drinks in a beautiful setting, it was certainly well worth the effort of getting up early! Leaving the café about half the group made their way back, some having cycled from Kendal, the other six continued and rode up the climb into Grizedale and onto Bouth via Dale Park, after The Rusland Beeches Jo and Jamie left to return home, leaving 4. After Bouth we continued on the gated road to Rusland and Thwaite Head. Martin wanted to have a challenge and took us up the very steep climb over to Graythwaite, at this point I thought maybe the others who had left earlier knew of Martins planned route. Conversation soon stopped and the only sound was very heavy breathing, but we all made to the top without resorting to walking! All that remained was the lovely road through Cunsey Woods to the ferry, the ferry was just about to leave as Martin and Neil boarded, and Geoff and Lynn stayed to have a lunch picnic on the lake shore.
Full route 47km 754m climbed
